SubTech conference, day one

The conference opened with an introductory seminar hosted by John Mayer of CALI -- Authoring Tools for Legal Instruction.  I missed the first 30 minutes or so, having boarded a train that stopped only at Oslo Central.  But I spent a pleasant time getting lost in the centre of Oslo, forming impressions as you do of an entirely new place, developing the cognitive map, etc.  A recent article in the Guardian described Norway as the richest country in Europe, thanks to its oil revenues.  I have to say I admire the way that, to a stranger, it wore its riches lightly.  What I saw of the infrastructure was impressive -- the train services that would make a UK commuter weep, the information services for a non-Norwegian speaker, etc.

Personal Thoughts...Powerful Learning

Paul has been cajoling and encouraging some of us to start contributing to this Blog and, I have to say, I was feeling felt somewhat apprehensive.  As AA Milne’s Pooh Bear said, 'When you are a Bear of Very Little Brain and you think of Things, you sometimes feel that a Thing which seemed very Thingish inside you is quite different when it gets out in the open and has other people looking at it.'  This got me wondering how my students feel when we ask them to use reflective logs as part of the learning process when they carry out their transactions in the Transactional Learning Environment at GGSL. 

New learning, new assessments

It was a student, come to see me because she couldn't believe she'd failed four exams.  Never failed one in her life, then the humiliation of four in a row in the Diploma.  After the shock, the blame: it was the Diploma, it was the fire alarm going off in one of the exams, it was not enough time for cramming, etc.  And then: 'it was that great idea of Ardcalloch [Paul raises eyebrows] No seriously it's a genius of an idea, but the trouble with it is that we were all used to doing coursework and transactions, and couldn't do exams again.'
