Education & employment
Paul has a degree in English Literature & Language (Glasgow University, '74-'78, MA Hons class I), doctorate from Edinburgh University (late nineteenth century literature, philosophy, aesthetics, '78-'81), PGCE (Jordanhill College of Education) which he took concurrently with a Diploma in Education at Glasgow University ('81-'82). He taught for eight years in adult and university education, before graduating in Law at Glasgow University ('90-'92, LLB). Since then he has taught in Glasgow Caledonian University, and from 1999 in the Law School at Strathclyde University.

Teaching
Currently in the GGSL he is co-Director, with Professor Leo Martin, of Legal Practice Courses (Diploma in Legal Practice, and Professional Competence Course). Both courses are requirements for law students who intend to enter the legal profession in Scotland. He teaches on the Foundation Course of the Diploma, is an online facilitator on the Personal Injury project, and has taught on the Skills Week in the second semester. Apart from induction teaching in the Law School, he is involved in the design and implementation of professional educational projects. These include curriculum strategy across the modules and subjects, and development of skills- and ICT-based teaching and learning in the Diploma and PCC, including the development of an online virtual community, multimedia and webcast virtual learning environments.

Research
Paul has published in the fields of legal education (particularly curriculum design and ICT), legal critique, law and literature (especially nineteenth century Scots law and literature) and the legal profession. In 1996/97 he was Director of the Trading Standards Research Group, which undertook research into the professional education of Trading Standards Officers throughout the UK. In 2001 he undertook research on behalf of the Law Society into the Professional Competence Course. He is currently engaged in international legal educational projects with the KODOS Group (Netherlands), the UK Centre for Legal Education, College of Law, and Georgia State University’s School of Law.

External posts
Paul has been an external examiner for the Robert Gordon University BA Law & Management degree, 1998-2001, and an external to the LLM/MSc in Law and New Technologies: AI, Risk & the Law at Edinburgh University. He is a member of the Society for Computers & Law; a member of EARLI (European Association for Research in Learning and Instruction); and was consultant to a number of education projects, including a report commissioned by the Scottish Executive on diversity in legal education, and a government-funded project, RechtenOnline, in the Netherlands. He is on the editorial boards of the Journal for Information, Law & Technology (JILT) and the International Review of Law, Computers & Technology. He was until this year Chair of BILETA (British & Irish Law Education Technology Association). He is a member of a number of committees within the Law Society of Scotland (Diploma Co-ordinating Committee; Professional Competence Course Accreditation Panel; Education &Training Committee, Diploma Working Party).
